Biodynamic viticulture, far from being a simple method of organic farming, is a global philosophy that perceives the vineyard as a living organism in its own right. It integrates agricultural practices that respect natural cycles, cosmic rhythms and biodiversity. At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodynamics aims to strengthen soil vitality, vine health and, ultimately, the authentic expression of the terroir in our wines. This involves the use of biodynamic compost, grass cover management and the application of herbal teas and dynamised preparations.
At the heart of biodynamics lies the use of nine preparations specified by Rudolf Steiner, distinguished by the numbers 500 to 508. Each of these preparations has a specific role, acting in synergy to stimulate soil and plant life. They are divided into two main categories: dung preparations (horn manure, 500) and silica preparations (horn silica, 501), applied by spraying, as well as the six compost preparations (502 to 507), integrated into the compost. The latter include yarrow (502), chamomile (503), nettle (504), oak (505), dandelion (506) and valerian (507).
At the heart of our biodynamic practices at Château Cazebonne, Preparation 501, also known as horn silica, plays a fundamental role. Imagine a breath of light, a cosmic energy infused into the vine: this is precisely the effect we are looking for with this preparation.
501 is obtained by filling cow horns (from cows that have had at least one calf, as the connection to life is stronger) with finely crushed quartz, then burying them during the summer months. It is during this period that the forces of heat and light are at their peak, allowing the silica to absorb these vital energies. Once unearthed, this powder is dynamised in water by performing a lemniscate movement (a figure of 8 on its side), thereby creating a vortex that transmits the information to the liquid. This dynamisation is a key process for releasing and transmitting the forces contained in the preparation.
Its application, by foliar spraying at minute doses (a few grams per hectare), takes place mainly in spring and summer, particularly as the harvest approaches. Silica, by its very nature, acts like a mirror, amplifying the action of light and heat on the plant. It strengthens the structure of the plant, promotes better photosynthesis and refines the quality of the grape skin, making it more resistant and visually more vibrant.
The effects are remarkable: the vine gains in vigour, the leaves are thicker and the grape berries develop a more intense aromatic expression and a deeper colour. Horn silica encourages the plant to open up to the cosmos, to better integrate aerial influences, thereby creating a subtle balance between terrestrial and celestial forces. It is a true call to light, which results in wines of greater purity, faithfully reflecting the typicality of their terroir. This meticulous work, the result of careful observation and a deep commitment, allows us to obtain grapes of exceptional quality. It is thanks to this approach that respects nature, supported by the many wine lovers who have adopted our wines, that we can also carry out our mission to replant forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux. This ampelographic heritage, brought to light by researchers such as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", is essential for the diversity and future of our vineyard, particularly in the face of climate challenges.
At Château Cazebonne, we are proud to contribute to preserving the ampelographic heritage of Bordeaux by replanting ancient grape varieties adapted to our terroir. This exciting work is made possible thanks to the support of all the wine enthusiasts who adopt our wines. We invite you to learn more about the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties by downloading our book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", to test your oenological knowledge, and of course to discover our biodynamic cuvées online.
