Preparation 503

The principles of biodynamics

Biodynamics is much more than a simple method of cultivation; it is a holistic agricultural philosophy that considers the wine estate as a living organism in its own right. At Château Cazebonne, we approach the vine not as an isolated entity, but as an element interconnected with its environment, influenced by cosmic and terrestrial rhythms. This approach aims to strengthen soil and plant health through specific preparations, dynamisation, and a sowing and planting calendar. The objective is to create a resilient, autonomous ecosystem that favours the authentic expression of the terroir. It forms part of a global agroecology approach in viticulture, notably fostering biodiversity across our entire estate.

The main biodynamic preparations

Biodynamic preparations are at the heart of this method. They are made from animal, plant, and mineral matter, and are used in infinitesimal doses to stimulate the vital processes of the soil and the plant. Among the most iconic are Preparation 500 (horn manure), to encourage microbial life and root development, and Preparation 501 (horn silica), which contributes to photosynthesis and fruit quality. Each preparation, from Preparation 502 (Yarrow) to 507 (Valerian), has a specific role, acting in synergy to strengthen the vitality of the ecosystem, including the lesser-known Preparation 508. They are often added to biodynamic compost to amplify its effects.

Preparation 503

At the heart of biodynamics at Château Cazebonne, each preparation plays an essential role in maintaining and strengthening the vitality of our soils and vines. Preparation 503, also known as the "oak bark preparation", is one of these keys. It represents a fundamental step in the dynamisation of our composts and, by extension, our terroirs.

This preparation is made from powdered oak bark. It is then placed inside an animal skull (often a cow's) and buried during the winter period, so that it is subjected to telluric influences. After this period of underground maturation, the transformed oak bark is added to compost heaps, acting as a catalyst. Its main role is to regulate calcium-related processes in the soil, improve compost structure, and increase plant resistance to fungal diseases. It notably promotes root balance and the harmonious development of the vine.

Far from being an esoteric practice, the use of 503 is part of a deep agronomic logic. The oak, a tree symbolic of strength, longevity, and abundant sap, transmits its properties to the compost, enriching the vine's living environment. Year after year, we observe the positive impact of this preparation on the health of our soils: better humification, increased microbial activity, and an optimised cation exchange capacity. These elements are crucial for the balanced nutrition of the vine and a more authentic expression of the terroir, where every nuance of the soil finds its resonance in the wine.

Cazebonne and biodynamics

Preparation 503, coupled with our other biodynamic practices, aims to create a resilient and autonomous viticultural ecosystem. This meticulous work, respectful of nature, guarantees sustainable viticulture that preserves the biodiversity of our estate. This commitment allows us to cultivate adapted grape varieties, such as those we are striving to reintroduce and replant in the Bordeaux vineyard, true treasures of an unjustly forgotten ampelographic heritage. This essential work for the diversity and resilience of our vineyard is made possible thanks to the support of the many wine lovers who have embraced our wines and share our vision.

Our biodynamic cuvées are the reflection of this philosophy, wines that tell the story of their terroir and authentically express the richness of their origin. Each bottle is the fruit of respectful work, guided by the conviction that nature, when listened to and honoured, offers the best of itself. To delve deeper into these themes, particularly the rich and sometimes little-known history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to download the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" available here. You can also test your wine knowledge with our oenological quizzes, or discover our wines online at the Cazebonne boutique, and thereby support our efforts to reintroduce ancient grape varieties and preserve biodiversity. Preparation 506 is also an example of these biodynamic treasures.
