In the incessant ballet of the weather that sculpts our vines, there is a moment when nature seems to hold its breath: sunset. At Château Cazebonne, we are fortunate to witness this magnificent spectacle on a daily basis, as the day's last rays set the sky and the rows of vines ablaze. It is not merely an aesthetic interlude; these golden and crimson lights are the reflection of a hard day's work, an ongoing ripening process, and the promise of a great vintage.
The sunsets in the Bordeaux vineyards are strikingly beautiful, painting the landscape in hues ranging from flamboyant orange to delicate pink, alongside intense purples. Each season brings its unique palette. In summer, the sun slowly sinks, leaving behind clear skies conducive to optimal grape ripening. In autumn, the vine leaves, already adorned in their shimmering colours, vibrate under the fading light, offering a wonderfully rich tableau. This poetic panorama captures the very essence of our terroir, a perfect alchemy between earth, light, and time.
These magical moments, frozen in time, remind us of the fragile and precious balance of our environment. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne points out in "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", the intensity of these sunny days, culminating in these spectacular sunsets, is not without impact on the personality of our wines. Sunlight is an essential factor for photosynthesis, which drives the ripening of the berries, influencing their sugar content, aromas, and the richness of their tannins. An intensely coloured sunset is often the sign of a beautiful day, favourable to the flourishing of our vines.
At Château Cazebonne, these enchanting landscapes are not only a source of inspiration; they are the silent witness to our commitment. Our philosophy is rooted in this approach of humility towards the elements and respect for our terroir. It is by embracing this complexity that we have been able to undertake a unique project: the reintroduction of forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux, those varieties which once made our vineyards so rich and diverse, but which had disappeared over time. This pioneering work, this quest for a more resilient and diverse Bordeaux, is made possible by the unwavering support of the many wine enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and our approach. You too can discover and support our vintages by visiting the Cazebonne shop. To deepen your knowledge of our region's winemaking history and the grape varieties that shape it, we invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" published by Éditions BBD, written by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne.
Sunset is the daily phenomenon where the sun disappears below the horizon, marking the end of the day and the beginning of the night. This moment is defined by the instant when the centre of the solar disk passes below the horizon, determined by the Earth's rotation. For the winegrower, it is much more than a mere astronomical observation. It is a daily snapshot of the sky's condition, air quality, and the prevailing atmosphere over the terroir. Similarly, sunrises herald the dawn of a new working day and the promises it holds for the vines.
The science behind the flamboyant colours of a sunset is fascinating. When the sun is low on the horizon, its rays travel through a greater thickness of the atmosphere. Air molecules and particles refract and scatter the blue and green wavelengths of sunlight, letting only the reds, oranges, and yellows pass through. It is this phenomenon of Rayleigh scattering that creates the spectacular palette we admire. The presence of dust, water vapour, or even volcanic ash in the atmosphere can intensify these colours, making every sunset unique. For the vineyard, a clear sky and pure air at the end of the day are often signs of good weather conditions for grape ripening.
The time and intensity of the sunset vary considerably throughout the seasons, directly influencing the vine's cycle. In summer, long days allow for maximum photosynthesis, and sunset brings a period of intense activity for the plant to a close. During autumn in the vineyards, as temperatures drop and the harvest approaches, the evening's golden hues mingle with the shimmering colours of the vine leaves, initiating the winter dormancy. It is an indicator of the climatic changes that profoundly impact the grape's development.
The experienced winegrower can draw valuable information from the daily observation of the setting sun. A bright red sky can herald dry and sunny weather for the following day, which is essential for the health of the berries and for disease prevention. Conversely, a hazy horizon or a dull twilight could presage a change in the weather. These observations, combined with other meteorological factors, help anticipate and adapt vineyard work, from pruning to harvesting.
At Château Cazebonne, we are constantly amazed by the sunsets over our vines. This spectacle is not only a source of inspiration; it symbolises our philosophy of respecting nature and our commitment to agroecology. These lights remind us of the beauty and power of the elements, and the importance of working in harmony with our environment. We strive to create wines that are the pure reflection of this terroir, its history, and the vine's life cycle.
Although often associated with a romantic image, the sunset is far from being a mere cliché for the vineyard. It is a concrete indicator of many atmospheric and climatic phenomena, directly influencing the next day's weather and, consequently, the vineyard work and the future quality of the wine. Its beauty is inseparable from its crucial role in the life of the vineyard. Similarly, observing a rainbow in the vineyards is a promising sign of an ideal atmospheric balance for the vines.
Château Cazebonne is committed to the reintroduction of forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux, an approach made possible thanks to the support of enlightened wine enthusiasts.
