The world of wine is constantly evolving, and the exploration of forgotten grape varieties or those from distant terroirs opens up new perspectives. At Château Cazebonne, we are committed to this innovative approach, breathing new life into varieties that enrich our aromatic palette and strengthen our vineyard's adaptability. This category of grape varieties "from elsewhere" encompasses ancestral varieties, innovative crossings and more recent introductions, all sharing a unique potential to shape the wines of tomorrow.
These grape varieties, often forgotten or originating from other wine regions, are characterised by their ability to bring diversity and resilience to the vineyard. Whether they are traditional Bordeaux varieties that have fallen into disuse, historical grape varieties born from natural crossings, or more recent introductions selected for their resistance, they offer an opportunity for renewal and adaptation. This movement is not limited to grape varieties from natural crossings but also includes resistant grape varieties, developed to better face current climatic and health challenges. They represent invaluable avenues to counter the effects of phylloxera in Bordeaux, but in a modern context of climate change. Find other fascinating examples in the encounters with modest grape varieties category.
The history of the vine and the Bordeaux vineyard has never been static. From the Middle Ages onwards, trade and migrations introduced new grape varieties that acclimatised to local soils and climates. Jean-Baptiste Duquesne, in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", highlights this historical dynamic, showing how varieties like Carménère, today emblematic of other terroirs, left their mark before giving way to the dominant grape varieties. The past reveals that diversification has always driven the vineyard's evolution, a principle we reaffirm today in the face of unprecedented challenges.
Grape varieties "from elsewhere" often share characteristics of great interest to modern viticulture. Many of them show better resistance to mildew, oïdium and drought, crucial assets in the face of climate change. Oenologically speaking, they enrich both red and white winemaking by offering new aromatic profiles and varied textures. Examples such as Marselan or Arinarnoa, recently authorised in Bordeaux, illustrate this search for resilience and complexity, as do grape varieties like Touriga Nacional.
At Château Cazebonne, we are committed to reintroducing and exploring these grape varieties. This approach is a quest for biodiversity and innovation, restoring the rightful place of varieties that have previously contributed to the wealth of our region or that offer sustainable solutions for the future. Our commitment is to produce wines with an assertive personality, demonstrating a deep connection to their terroir.
