Original Wine in Bordeaux: The Boldness of Château Cazebonne

Bordeaux often conjures up images of a vineyard region deeply attached to its traditions and its grands crus classés. Yet, behind this reputation for timeless elegance lies a region in constant evolution, where innovation and originality have a rightful place. At Château Cazebonne, we embrace this dynamic spirit by offering wines off the beaten track—daring creations that spark curiosity and reinvent the tasting experience.

What gives our wines this sought-after touch of originality?

  • The Revival of Forgotten Grape Varieties

This is our most distinctive and exciting endeavour. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne explains in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" (Éditions BBD), many varieties once cultivated in Bordeaux gradually disappeared in favour of today's dominant grapes. At Cazebonne, we are among the rare few who have undertaken the replanting and vinification of these treasures of the past: Mancin, Castets, Saint-Macaire, Bouchalès, or even the Méthode Ancestrale Blanc Verdet... Tasting these grape varieties means treating yourself to an unprecedented sensory journey, discovering aromatic profiles and textures surprising for a Bordeaux wine, far removed from the beaten track and classic blends. It means breathing new life into an exceptional viticultural heritage.

  • Daring Vinifications

We do not hesitate to explore different winemaking techniques to reveal the full expression of our terroirs and grape varieties. We thus craft orange wine—a skin-contact maceration of white grapes—offering an amber hue, a delicate tannic structure, and complex, captivating aromas. We also produce Pétillants Naturels (Pet'Nat) using the ancestral method, yielding fine, natural, festive, and fruity bubbles: a refreshing alternative to traditional crémants.

  • The Living Wine Approach

Our commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture extends into our cellars. We favour low-intervention winemaking, relying on indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphur additions. The result: wines brimming with energy, vibrant and evolving, which surprise with their pure expression and vitality. Each bottle tells a story, reflecting the natural balance of the vine and the vintage.

  • Unprecedented Blends

The diversity of our grape plantings, particularly through the inclusion of these rare varieties, enables us to craft blends of great originality. Moving beyond the classic Merlot-Cabernet or Sauvignon-Sémillon frameworks, we bring you cuvées whose complexity and balance defy convention, opening up new gustatory horizons.

A Commitment to Diversity in the Bordeaux Vineyard

Our goal is not originality for originality's sake, but to offer wines with true personality and soul, telling the story of a terroir and its rediscovered heritage. It is an invitation to rediscover Bordeaux from a new perspective, challenging preconceptions and exploring unexpected diversity. Our approach is part of a broader movement of Bordeaux renewal, in which more and more winegrowers are turning to forgotten varieties and ancestral techniques, adapting them to contemporary challenges, particularly climate change. This movement is sometimes embodied by initiatives such as the Bordeaux Pirate label, symbolising a desire to break away from conventions and explore new paths.

Reviving Bordeaux's Viticultural Heritage

Replanting these lost varieties is an ambitious, long-term project made possible by the unwavering support of the many wine lovers who have embraced our wines. It is thanks to your curiosity and trust that we can continue to innovate and preserve this precious winemaking heritage.

To deepen your knowledge of the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties and understand our philosophy, we invite you to receive the digital edition of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages" published by Éditions BBD and written by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne.
