At Château Cazebonne, spring unfolds a delicate spectacle in our vines every year: the immaculate blooming of the ornithogalum. This ravishing plant with pure white flowers is one of the messengers of the biodiversity we cherish, a discreet witness to the vitality of our soils, which are cultivated using organic and biodynamic agriculture. Far from being a mere wildflower, it is a precious guest in our viticultural ecosystem.
The ornithogalum, of the genus Ornithogalum, is primarily represented in our plots by species such as the Garden Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) or the Pyrenean Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum pyrenaicum). It is an elegant perennial plant, belonging to the Asparagaceae family, formerly classified under Hyacinthaceae. Its name, of Greek origin, refers to the shape of its flowers, poetically recalling a "bird's tail". While they often adorn gardens, their natural presence in our plots is a source of joy and information for us. These plants are distinguished by their smooth, elongated, dark green leaves forming a basal rosette, from which a floral stem of 20 to 60 cm emerges depending on the species, bearing a cluster of star-shaped flowers. Although some varieties boast pink or yellow hues, it is the pure white that we predominantly observe, bringing a singular luminosity between the vines.
At Cazebonne, the ornithogalum makes its striking appearance in spring, generally between April and June, adding a touch of colour and life to our rows. It flourishes particularly well on our clay-gravel terroirs, testifying to the good health of a living and undisturbed soil. We often observe it on the edge of the plots or in grassed areas where tillage is less frequent, thereby guaranteeing its life cycle.
Beyond its beauty, the ornithogalum, like all the flora present in our vines, actively contributes to the health of our terroir. Its fasciculated roots help to aerate and structure the soil, while its foliage, albeit modest, helps to maintain a certain humidity by limiting direct evaporation. Its presence is an indicator of the organic richness and good biological health of our plots, conditions that are essential for the flourishing of the vine and the expression of its terroir. It also helps support biodiversity by providing a habitat and a food source for pollinating insects in early spring.
At Château Cazebonne, this attentive observation of the flora is an integral part of our approach in favour of biodiversity. The presence of the ornithogalum illustrates our commitment to restoring a balanced ecosystem, which is essential not only for the vitality of the vineyard but also for the quality and typicity of our wines. It is in this same spirit that we are working on replanting forgotten grape varieties that made the wealth of Bordeaux. To delve deeper into these themes, we invite you to read our article on the Star-of-Bethlehem. Also, discover the story of the daffodil, another spring flower that embellishes our vines.
This pioneering work, this quest for authenticity and diversity, would not be possible without the unwavering support of the numerous wine lovers who have embraced the unique flavours of our cuvées, thus helping to write a new chapter in Bordeaux's viticultural history. To deepen your knowledge of Bordeaux's ancestral grape varieties and our commitment, we also invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", enrich your oenological culture with our quizzes, or discover the unique expression of our terroirs and rediscovered grape varieties by visiting the Cazebonne shop.
