The daffodil

The Daffodil: The spring radiance of our living soils

At Château Cazebonne, every bloom heralds the renewal of our vines' life cycle. Among the first to open, the daffodil (Narcissus), an elegant member of the Amaryllidaceae family, brings a touch of gold and light from the very first days of spring. A symbol of resilience and hope, its robust and often bright yellow flowers – although white, pink and bi-coloured variations exist – bear witness to the richness of our soils and the vitality of the ecosystem we cultivate.

Description and life cycle

The long, slender leaves of the daffodil, reminiscent of blades of straw, emerge from the bulb to accompany the floral stem, which can reach from 30 centimetres up to one metre in height. This bulbous plant is distinguished by its central crown (trumpet) surrounded by six tepals. Its early flowering often takes place between February and April, marking the beginning of spring in the vines even before bud break. This early cycle allows the daffodil to capture solar energy before being shaded by the vine leaves, and then to prepare for a period of dormancy during the warmest months.

Habitat and ecological role in the vineyard

Easy to grow, the daffodil naturally finds its place in our vine rows, where it fully thrives. It prefers generous sunshine or light shade, and is particularly fond of well-drained soils bursting with organic matter – conditions that we strive to maintain through our organic and biodynamic farming practices. Its presence is not merely aesthetic; like many other flowers in our vines, it is a valuable indicator of the microbiological health of our terroirs. Far from being a simple ornamental flower, the daffodil, through the decomposition of its bulbs and leaves, contributes to enriching the soil with organic matter, thereby improving its structure and fertility. It participates in the aeration of the surface layers and helps to retain the moisture essential for the healthy growth of the vine. This natural balance, where every plant element plays a specific role, is at the heart of our philosophy at Cazebonne. It allows us to strengthen the resilience of our vineyards against climatic hazards and to foster a biodiversity essential to the life of our soils, as Jean-Baptiste Duquesne emphasises: soil life is the pillar of a great terroir.

What we observe in practice at Château Cazebonne

At Château Cazebonne, daffodils are widely present between the rows of the vineyard, particularly on our plots richest in organic matter. Their spectacular flowering at the end of winter and beginning of spring transforms the landscape into a golden carpet, offering a magnificent spectacle and actively contributing to the balance of the ecosystem. They have no harmful interaction with the vine and are considered neutral to beneficial. By cultivating this floral diversity, we recreate an environment conducive not only to the vine but also to rarer species.

In the same spirit, Château Cazebonne is passionately committed to replanting ancestral Bordeaux grape varieties, such as Castets, Mancin or Saint-Macaire, which were once forgotten. This work to safeguard our viticultural heritage, essential for enriching the aromatic diversity of our wines, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our cuvées.
