Biodynamics is a holistic agricultural approach that considers the wine estate as a living, self-sustaining organism. It is inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner and aims to strengthen the vitality of the soil and the plant by harmonising cosmic and telluric forces. At Château Cazebonne, we apply these principles to cultivate healthy vines and produce wines that express the purity of our terroir.
This method, which goes beyond simple organic certification, relies on the use of specific preparations, the observation of lunar and planetary rhythms, and the promotion of biodiversity. It aims to make the vines self-sufficient, rendering them more resilient to diseases and climatic hazards, and to foster the authentic expression of the terroir in our wines.
Biodynamic preparations are the heart of this agriculture. They take the form of natural, mineral, plant, or animal substances, used in homeopathic doses. Each preparation has a specific role, whether it is to stimulate growth, strengthen the plant's immune system, or improve the soil's structure. Among them, we find preparation 500 (horn manure) to dynamise soil life, preparation 501 (horn silica) to promote photosynthesis, and the compost preparations (502 to 507) that enrich organic matter.
These preparations are integrated into the compost, the soil, or directly onto the plants, after having been dynamised in water to release their subtle forces. It is meticulous work that requires a deep understanding of the interactions between the vine and its environment.
At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodynamics is demonstrated by meticulous attention to every detail of the vegetative cycle. Among the essential preparations that nourish this approach, preparation 504 occupies a prominent place, acting as a true catalyst for the vitality of our composts.
Made from dandelion flowers (Taraxacum officinale), this biodynamic preparation transforms an often underestimated plant into a powerful ally for the vineyard. The flowers are carefully picked at precise moments dictated by the biodynamic calendar, then carefully placed into a bovine mesentery. This whole assembly is then buried during the winter period, allowing cosmic and telluric forces to penetrate and transform the organic matter. This subtle process enriches the dandelion with unique dynamic qualities, preparing it for its future role within our composts.
The main action of preparation 504 is to intensively stimulate microbial activity and optimise the assimilation of silicon by the vine. Silicon, often called the element of structure and light, is crucial for strengthening the cell walls of plants, making them more resilient to diseases, pest attacks, and climatic stress. By fostering a balanced silica cycle, preparation 504 actively contributes to better photosynthesis, a more nuanced expression of the grape's aromas, and, ultimately, the creation of wines that authentically reflect their terroir.
At Château Cazebonne, integrating preparation 504 into our composts is a key step in cultivating healthy, robust vines without the use of any synthetic products. Composts enriched in this way become hubs of life, stimulating exceptional biodiversity in our soils. This microbial richness is essential for the vitality of our rootstocks and the ability of our vines to draw the necessary nutrients. This pursuit of natural balance is evident in the vigour of our vines and the pure expression of our terroir, providing an ideal environment for growing rediscovered heritage grape varieties.
By adopting these demanding biodynamic practices, we do not simply produce exceptional wines. We actively work towards the preservation and reintroduction of forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties, as highlighted by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". This work, which is essential for the future resilience and diversity of our vineyard, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. To deepen your knowledge of the history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to receive the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", published by Éditions BBD and written by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne. You can also test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes, or discover our biodynamic cuvées available for purchase now on our Cazebonne online shop.
