Biodynamics is based on a holistic vision of agriculture, considering the wine estate as a living organism. It integrates cosmic and earthly rhythms to promote the vitality of soils and plants. Rather than simply correcting imbalances, it seeks to strengthen the system's self-regulating forces. This involves the use of specific preparations, careful observation of nature, and respect for the soil's microbial life, which are essential elements for sustainable viticulture. It is not just a cultivation method; it is a philosophy that aims to harmonise man, the earth, and the cosmos.
At the heart of biodynamics are nine preparations, numbered 500 to 508, each playing a specific role in soil fertility or vine health. Some are intended to be sprayed directly onto the plants or soil, such as the famous preparation 500 (horn manure) to stimulate soil life, or preparation 501 (horn silica) to promote photosynthesis and ripening. Others are used to enrich biodynamic compost, acting as catalysts for the transformation processes of organic matter. This is the case for the six compost preparations: preparation 502 (yarrow), preparation 503 (chamomile), preparation 504 (nettle), 505 (oak bark), preparation 506 (dandelion), and 507 (valerian). Each preparation brings its own specific qualities, working in concert to strengthen the vitality of the vineyard ecosystem.
Among the nine fundamental biodynamic preparations, each providing its own balance and specific support, preparation 505 stands out for its protective and structuring role. Made from oak bark, it is an invaluable ally for the compost and, by extension, for the resilience of our vineyard at Château Cazebonne.
Oak bark, naturally rich in calcium, is a central element of this preparation. It is harvested with careful attention to natural cycles, at precise moments when its properties are most intense. After being crushed, it undergoes a unique step: it is macerated and placed inside the skull of a domestic animal, usually a horned beast. Far from being anecdotal, this process aims to capture and concentrate telluric and cosmic energies. The skull is then buried during the winter months, allowing the preparation to deeply absorb earthly forces and the regenerative power of the cold.
With the return of spring, preparation 505 is unearthed. It is then "dynamised", meaning it is diluted in rainwater and stirred manually in a precise rhythmic motion. This crucial dynamisation phase aims to vitalise the preparation and transfer its information and energy to the medium on which it will be applied. Its primary action is to provide fundamental support to the compost. It acts as a natural shield, strengthening protection against cryptogamic diseases, particularly various fungi, and promoting the balanced and healthy decomposition of organic matter. Compost enriched with 505 is a true treasure for the vine, offering it increased vigour, better resistance to external aggressions, and an amplified capacity to express the typicity and depth of its terroir.
At Château Cazebonne, integrating preparation 505 into our biodynamic practices is a cornerstone of our winemaking philosophy. By fortifying the vitality of our soils and the health of our vines, we lay the foundations for resilient agriculture that respects living ecosystems. This approach allows us not only to grow grapes of exceptional quality but also to actively support our project of reintroducing Bordeaux's lost grape varieties. Varieties such as Castets and Mancin, once dominant, are finding their place back in our vineyard thanks to this foundational work. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne highlights in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", rediscovering and reintroducing these grape varieties is essential for the future of Bordeaux vineyards, offering invaluable assets in the face of climate challenges and enriching the aromatic palette of our wines.
This passionate work of preserving our ampelographic heritage, crucial for the biodiversity and resilience of our vineyard, is made possible by the unwavering support of the many wine enthusiasts who have embraced our wines and share our vision.
