Preparation 506

The principles of biodynamics

Biodynamics is a holistic agricultural philosophy that goes beyond the standards of organic farming by integrating environmental, ecological, social and spiritual perspectives. It views the agricultural estate as an ecosystem in its own right, a living, independent and self-sufficient organism. Its principles are based on an understanding of natural rhythms (lunar, solar and planetary) and the use of specific preparations to revitalise the soil and plants. At Château Cazebonne, this approach aims to strengthen the vitality of the vine and the expression of the terroir, creating a harmonious balance between the earth, the plant and the cosmos. To find out more about this approach, you can consult our dedicated page: All about biodynamics.

The main biodynamic preparations

Biodynamic preparations are key elements of this agriculture. They are designed to support soil life and plant growth, each having a specific function. There are several categories, such as compost preparations (502 to 507) and spray preparations (500 and 501). Preparation 500, or "horn manure", promotes root development and soil life. Preparation 501, or "horn silica", stimulates photosynthesis and fruit quality. The other preparations (502, Preparation 503, Preparation 504, 505, 507) are integrated into the compost for specific effects, such as activating fermentation processes and promoting microbial biodiversity.

Preparation 506: the subtle art of biodynamic compost

At the heart of the biodynamic practice at Château Cazebonne, Preparation 506, made from oak bark, embodies one of these targeted interventions that strengthen the vitality of our terroir. Far from being a simple soil amendment, this preparation is the result of a deep understanding of the interactions between the soil, the plant and cosmic forces, forming part of a holistic approach. The carefully selected oak bark is intrinsically rich in calcium and tannins. These elements are renowned for their ability to fortify the vine, acting as a natural shield against fungal diseases, notably powdery mildew which can affect the plant's health. Beyond its material composition, Preparation 506 is dynamised by a specific process and integrated into the compost, thus becoming a vector of subtle energies. It stimulates life processes in the soil, promotes microbiological balance and increases the vine's resilience against external aggressions. Its application is designed according to lunar and planetary rhythms, key moments when cosmic influences are most conducive to its assimilation by the earth and its effectiveness.

Cazebonne and biodynamics

This approach, where humus and soil biodiversity are paramount, is the cornerstone of our viticulture. A healthy soil, rich in micro-organisms, is able to nourish the vine deeply and impart increased vitality. This is the very foundation of a strong, self-sustaining vine. The wines made from vines cultivated with Preparation 506 and other biodynamic preparations thus reveal a purer expression of their terroir, increased aromatic complexity and better ageing potential. Each application of 506 is a step further towards this sought-after balance, a constant dialogue with nature to draw out its best, without artifice.

This commitment to respectful and innovative viticulture has also allowed us to go further in our mission: that of replanting forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux that have shaped the region's winemaking history. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne highlights in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", rediscovering and reintroducing these ancient varieties is crucial for the future of the appellation, offering new aromatic palettes and better adaptation to climatic challenges. To deepen your knowledge of the history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to download the digital version of this book published by BBD and to test your knowledge via our oenological quizzes. This work to preserve our ampelographic heritage, which is essential for the diversity and resilience of our vineyard, is made possible thanks to the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. You can find our biodynamic cuvées for sale on the Cazebonne shop.
