I want itViper's bugloss
At the heart of our vineyards, where biodiversity reigns supreme, purple viper's bugloss (Echium plantagineum) proves to be much more than a mere floral presence. This herbaceous perennial plant, a member of the vast Boraginaceae family, also sometimes called 'plantain-leaved viper's bugloss', is native to the Mediterranean basin, particularly Spain and Portugal. It flourishes gracefully across our terroirs, bearing witness to living soils and a natural balance that we cultivate with care at Château Cazebonne.
Often reaching an impressive height of between 60 and 120 cm, purple viper's bugloss catches the eye with its basal rosettes of leaves, reminiscent of plantain, and its magnificent tubular flowers. Ranging from deep blue to vibrant purple, these unfurling coiled flower spikes offer a striking visual spectacle, particularly in spring and early summer. Beyond their beauty, they play an essential role in our vineyard ecosystem, attracting a multitude of pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies. This pollinating activity is of paramount importance to the overall health of our environment and the longevity of our biodiversity.
The life cycle of purple viper's bugloss spans mainly through spring and early summer. After the seeds germinate, the plant rapidly develops its leaf rosette before sending up spectacular flowering stems. The flowering period, which extends over several weeks, is followed by the production of small seeds, ensuring the species' reproduction. Its ability to self-seed naturally contributes to its constant presence among the flora and cover crops of our parcels.
At Château Cazebonne, purple viper's bugloss is particularly prominent in the grassed areas of our vineyards, especially between the vine rows where we encourage biodiversity. It can be seen blooming abundantly in parcels that benefit from generous sunshine, on well-draining, slightly calcareous soils. Its vigour bears testament to the good health of our living soils, which are rich in organic matter.
The presence of purple viper's bugloss is also a valuable indicator for our vineyard team. Like all the flora we allow to express themselves between our vine rows—be it viper's bugloss, red dead-nettle, or tassel hyacinth—it provides valuable insights into the composition and structure of our soils, confirming the richness and sound stewardship of our organically farmed land. Its roots contribute to soil aeration, substrate structuring, and organic matter enrichment, all of which are fundamental to the vitality of our vines. Thanks to its appeal to insects like bees and butterflies, it actively participates in pollination and, by extension, in the reproduction of other plant species and the sustenance of local food webs.
By fostering such floral diversity, we strengthen the natural resilience of our vineyard, creating an environment conducive to the unique expression of our terroirs. It is through this very approach that Château Cazebonne is passionately committed to replanting grape varieties that had almost disappeared from the Bordeaux landscape, such as Castets, Mancin, and Saint-Macaire. This meticulous preservation and revival work is only made possible thanks to the invaluable support of the many wine enthusiasts who have embraced the distinct flavours of our cuvées, thereby contributing to the writing of a new chapter in Bordeaux's viticultural history.
To deepen your understanding of this fascinating history, we invite you to receive the digital edition of "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". You can then test your knowledge with our wine quizzes, before perhaps being tempted to discover our wines on the Cazebonne shop.
