I want itLen de l'El

Len de l'El is a white grape variety whose name evokes the richness of our viticultural heritage. Long associated with the Gaillac vineyard, it is listed in the official catalogue of vine varieties where it was historically registered. It was also among the secondary grape varieties authorised for the Bordeaux appellation as early as 1935. Although some confusion existed with the Ondenc grape variety, Len de l'El stands out for its distinct ampelographic characteristics and its appeal to sustainability-minded winegrowers.
This grape variety, whose name is sometimes spelled Lent de l'El or even Len de l'Eh, originates from the South-West and shows remarkable adaptation to the region's viticultural conditions. Its history in Bordeaux, though less documented for the general public, is an integral part of the ancient wine landscape, testifying to the past diversity of Bordeaux grape varieties. Abbé Bellet, in his 1736 writings on the grape varieties of the Bordelais, was already mentioning this varietal wealth.
| Characteristic | Description |
|---|---|
| Budburst | Early, making it susceptible to spring frosts. |
| Vigour | Medium to high, requiring careful canopy management. |
| Growth habit | Upright. |
| Downy mildew susceptibility | Susceptible. |
| Powdery mildew susceptibility | Low susceptibility, which is an asset for sustainable viticulture. |
| Botrytis susceptibility | Low susceptibility, an advantage for limiting spray treatments. |
| Ripening | Early, allowing for early harvesting. |
| Aromatic profile | Wines with floral and fruity aromas (citrus, pear), with lovely freshness. |
| Winemaking potential | Produces crisp, aromatic white wines, often intended to be enjoyed young. It can contribute aromatic complexity to blends. |
In the face of climate challenges and evolving consumer expectations, grape varieties like Len de l'El, with their resilience against certain diseases, are increasingly studied and valued by committed winegrowers. Château Cazebonne is part of this initiative to promote biodiversity in the Bordeaux vineyard, exploring and replanting grape varieties that have shaped the region's history.
This rediscovery work, such as the efforts we are leading for Len de l'El and other forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties, is an ongoing commitment. To explore the history of our vineyard further, we invite you to download the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages".
