I want itRed-Legged Partridge
The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is much more than a simple bird; it is a symbol of the richness and balance of our ecosystems. This galliform of the Phasianidae family, recognisable by its reddish-brown plumage, fine grey and black stripes on the flanks, and white 'bibs' rimmed with black, brings a vibrant touch of life to our plots. Of a respectable size of around 30 cm and weighing approximately 300 grams, it is also distinguished by its bright red legs and beak, elegantly contrasting with its piercing gaze. Its presence, once threatened by intensive agricultural practices, is a precious indicator of the good health of our terroirs.
A faithful inhabitant of open landscapes mixing crops, fallow land, and woodland edges, the red-legged partridge finds an ideal habitat at Château Cazebonne. It feeds mainly on seeds, young shoots, insects, and small invertebrates, naturally contributing to the biological regulation of certain vine pests. Its ground-nesting broods, often hidden in the tall grass of our grassed inter-rows or under the hedgerows we preserve, are an encouraging sign of the success of our biodiversity efforts. The discretion of this bird makes it a privileged observer of the restored ecosystem of our vineyards, bearing witness to the positive impact of respectful viticulture.
The red-legged partridge is active all year round, but its life cycle is particularly interesting in spring, the breeding season when pairs form and nests are established, often in areas of dense vegetation safe from predators. The young, known as 'red-legged partridges', hatch after about three weeks of incubation and are quickly independent. These birds are sedentary and remain faithful to their territory, as can be observed at Cazebonne, where they interact with other animal species such as insects and the local flora.
Its presence is beneficial to the vineyard. By consuming insects and weed seeds, the red-legged partridge actively participates in the natural regulation of pest populations and limits the proliferation of unwanted weeds, thereby reducing the need for human intervention. It causes no significant damage to the vines themselves, feeding on the ground and not affecting the bunches. This contribution to the ecological balance aligns perfectly with our sustainable and biodynamic viticulture approach.
At Château Cazebonne, we are proud to contribute to the protection of these emblematic species while reviving the Bordeaux winemaking heritage. This long-term undertaking, this quest for authenticity and singularity, would be impossible without the unfailing support of the many wine enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision, allowing us to breathe new life into these viticultural treasures that had vanished from the Bordeaux landscape. We invite you to learn more by downloading the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", to test your knowledge via our oenological quizzes, and to discover our cuvées, the fruit of this passion and commitment, by visiting the Cazebonne boutique.
