I want itIn the vineyard ecosystem, cover crop management is a major consideration, and grasses play a prominent role. Far from being simple "weeds" to be eradicated, these herbaceous plants—particularly grass-type cover crops—are increasingly valued for their multiple benefits. They actively contribute to soil life by encouraging micro-organisms and limiting erosion. Their dense, fibrous root systems improve soil structure, facilitating water infiltration and aeration—essential conditions for healthy, resilient vines.
At Château Cazebonne, we integrate grasses into our agroecological practices to enhance vineyard biodiversity. In particular, they are included in our cover crop seed mixes, providing organic matter and regulating vine vigour. This approach is part of a comprehensive philosophy to foster living, resilient soils.
One of the primary functions of grasses is their ability to stabilise soil. Their deep root systems help bind the earth, preventing erosion—especially on sloped plots or during heavy rainfall. This natural protection is all the more vital in the context of climate change. Furthermore, the water and nutrient competition they exert on the vine helps manage its vigour, promoting higher grape quality. This naturally regulates yields and prevents excessive vegetative growth, which is crucial for the balance of the vine's annual cycle.
Historically, the presence of spontaneous plants in Bordeaux vineyards has always been a concern for winegrowers. As an early work on viticulture in the Bordelais highlights, these plants were often regarded as "harmful" due to their "ease of development and propagation". However, this observer of the time already noted that some of these grasses, through their abundance and permanence, could even be seen as "characteristic" of certain vineyards and, surprisingly, as "indicative of the very qualities of their wines". This observation demonstrates an early, if incomplete, awareness of the interaction between spontaneous flora and terroir, an idea that modern viticulture embraces today by managing grass cover rather than systematically eradicating it.
Château Cazebonne is committed to reviving viticultural practices that respect both the environment and traditions, exploring and replanting historic Bordeaux grape varieties. This work, steeped in history and passion, is made possible thanks to your support. To learn more about our history and methods, feel free to download our book on forgotten grape varieties.
