Biodynamics is much more than a simple agricultural method; it is a philosophy, a holistic approach that considers the wine estate as a living organism, integrated into a wider ecosystem. Inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, it relies on the observation of natural, lunar, and cosmic rhythms to guide human interventions. The objective is to strengthen the vitality of the soil and the plant, thereby promoting the purest expression of the terroir and the production of authentic wines. This method is distinguished by the use of specific biodynamic preparations.
At Château Cazebonne, we adhere to these principles, seeking to create a harmonious balance between the vines, the soil, and the surrounding flora and fauna. This translates into a special focus on biodiversity, soil regeneration, and the estate's autonomy. The goal is to cultivate healthy grapes, full of life, which faithfully reflect the identity of our Graves terroir.
Biodynamic preparations are at the heart of biodynamic agriculture. They are obtained from plant, animal, or mineral substances, and are used in infinitesimal doses to dynamise the soil and plants. Their role is to act as catalysts, stimulating vital forces and improving soil fertility, vine growth, and resistance to disease. The main numbered preparations, ranging from 500 to 507, each have a specific role:
At the heart of our biodynamic approach at Château Cazebonne, every element of our ecosystem is valued, and compost is an essential pillar of this. Far from being a simple amendment, our compost is a true "concentrate of life", enriched by specific preparations, including the famous preparation 507.
Preparation 507, made from valerian flowers, is much more than an ingredient; it is a vital catalyst for our composts. Carefully incorporated, it infuses the mixture with a special energy, promoting transformation processes and amplifying microbial richness. Its role is to provide the soil with calcium forces that act both on the structure of the terroir and on the health of the vine. These forces help strengthen the plants' resistance to disease and regulate the ripening processes, thus guaranteeing the balance and vitality of our vines.
In biodynamic philosophy, each preparation has a specific resonance with natural elements and cosmic rhythms. Valerian, with its soothing and regulating virtues, transmits qualities of warmth and protection to the compost, which are then reflected in the vigour of our vines and the complexity of our wines. The compost, thus dynamised by 507, becomes a precious humus. It improves soil structure, loosens compact soils, and gives body to light soils, encouraging deep root exploration and better assimilation of nutrients by the vine. This essential contribution deeply nourishes the earth, creating an environment conducive to the purest expression of our terroir.
At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodynamics is a comprehensive approach that permeates all our viticultural practices. This meticulous and earth-respecting work allows us to cultivate old and sometimes forgotten grape varieties, which are the wealth of our viticultural heritage. Indeed, at Château Cazebonne, we are committed to replanting grape varieties in Bordeaux that have marked its history, as highlighted by Jean-Baptiste Duquesne in his book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages".
This unique preservation work is made possible by the support of the many enthusiasts who have adopted our wines and share our vision. Every bottle you taste contributes to this renaissance, to the diversity of our terroirs, and to the resilience of our vineyard in the face of climate challenges. To deepen your knowledge of the history of Bordeaux grape varieties, we invite you to download the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages". You can also test your knowledge via our oenological quizzes. Finally, discover our biodynamic cuvées for sale on our online store.
