Nanot

The Nanot grape variety, a Bordeaux ampelographic mystery

The Nanot grape is a variety whose mention dates back to the 19th century in the Bordeaux vineyards, but which still remains poorly defined. Descriptions from the time present a grape variety of medium vigour, particularly fertile, and capable of adapting to various soil types. However, its precise identity and its possible survival in the current vineyard remain subjects of debate. It is cited under synonyms such as Noschamps (in Ambarès and certain parts of the Gironde) and Pigue (in Ludon), as well as Pousse-debout in the Médoc, notably in Saint-Julien. These various names suggest a certain local spread, but complicate the traceability of this grape variety throughout the ages. To find out more about the traditional grape varieties of the region, please feel free to consult our section on the grape varieties of yesteryear. It is also interesting to look into the lost grape varieties of Bordeaux to understand the evolution of the viticultural heritage. The vagueness surrounding Nanot can be compared to other little-known grape varieties, such as Balzac (grape variety), which remains an enigma.

A grape variety cited in the 19th century, but difficult to say with certainty which variety it is

Descriptions of Nanot from the time are relatively detailed, evoking erect, whitish-coloured canes, closely spaced nodes, and particular foliage with round, slightly toothed, dark green leaves that are downy on their underside. The bunches were long, with medium-sized, juicy and tart berries covered by a thick skin. Its ripening was late (third epoch), and it produced a pale, quite alcoholic wine, but one considered ordinary. Despite this, it was recommended for warm soils and well-exposed slopes. This "production grape" character may have contributed to its decline in favour of more qualitative varieties or those better suited to the expectations of the modern wine market. Studying such grape varieties is essential for understanding the history of Bordeaux ampelography. Nanot is mentioned alongside grape varieties such as Pignon or Fer Servadou in terms of characteristics and viticultural potential.

Nanot appears in 19th-century ampelographic writings, such as the book "Les Raisins de cuve de la Gironde et du Sud-Ouest de la France, description et synonymie". Although its characteristics were documented, its name and its synonyms such as Noschamps or Pousse-debout in the Médoc highlight the uncertainty regarding its definitive identification. Its wine, although pale and ordinary, found its place in warm, sunny terroirs, thereby demonstrating its adaptability. Paradoxically, this rusticity and high production potential might have been the reasons for its gradual disappearance in favour of grape varieties deemed more "noble" or offering more complex wines, much like many other forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties. It is one of those varieties whose traceability is tricky and whose very existence is sometimes questioned by contemporary ampelographers, suggesting that it could be one of those grape varieties permanently lost from the Bordeaux wine landscape.
