Vine stocks

The vine stock, foundation of terroir expression

The vine stock is much more than just a support for grape production; it is a permanent, living structure, the true backbone of the viticultural ecosystem. Anchored deeply in the earth, the vine stock provides the essential connection between the underground world and the aerial part of the plant. Its roots, often invisible, deploy a complex network capable of drawing up water and nutrients, thus reflecting the richness and specificity of the viticultural terroirs. It is this subtle interaction that helps forge the unique identity of each wine, expressing the famous "goût de terroir".

Structure and role of the vine stock

The underground part, composed of roots and the rootstock selected for its adaptation to the soil and its resistance, is crucial for the nourishment and stability of the plant. Above ground, the stump or trunk branches into arms, then into canes which, each year, bear the leaves, tendrils, and bunches of grapes. The way the vine is trained and pruned (vine pruning), whether it be Single or Double Guyot, Cordon de Royat, or other systems, has a direct influence on vigour, sun exposure, and air circulation around the bunches—determining factors for optimal ripening and disease prevention. The choice and maintenance of the vine stock are therefore fundamental elements of vineyard work. To learn more about grafting techniques, we have prepared a dedicated category for omega grafting.

The vine stock, a witness to history and resilience

Each vine stock is a silent witness to the passage of time, the resilience of nature, and the meticulous work of the winegrowers. A vine stock can live for many decades, or even centuries, enduring the seasons and climatic hazards. Its longevity and ability to adapt bear witness to the delicate balance between the plant, its environment, and viticultural practices. Throughout the years, vine stocks accumulate reserves, enabling better resistance to stress and a deeper expression of the terroir in the wines produced. Old vines are particularly valued for the concentration and complexity of the juices they yield.

At Château Cazebonne: valuing the uniqueness of each vine stock

At Château Cazebonne, we pay particular attention to the uniqueness and vitality of each vine stock. Our approach aims to respect and strengthen the intrinsic connection between the vine, the living soil, and its biodiversity. By adopting viticulture that fosters natural balance, as illustrated by our efforts for living soils, we allow each vine stock to express itself fully and contribute to the crafting of authentic wines. This philosophy also guides our work in rediscovering and replanting the lost grape varieties of Bordeaux, offering a new life to varieties steeped in history.

Our commitment to biodiversity and viticultural heritage is made possible by the support of wine enthusiasts. By choosing to adopt our cuvées, they contribute directly to the perpetuation of environmentally friendly practices and the revival of ancient grape varieties.
