L'Anthurus d'Archer: a fascinating oddity in our vines

At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodiversity sometimes leads to unexpected discoveries, such as L'Anthurus d'Archer (Clathrus archeri). This fungus, native to Australia and Tasmania, is a true botanical curiosity and an indicator of the richness of our soils. Its appearance in our plots, although rare, testifies to a balanced ecosystem where fungal life, so essential to the vitality of the vine, finds favourable conditions to flourish.

L'Anthurus d'Archer, also known as "devil's fingers" due to its astonishing shape, is a saprophytic organism. This means it feeds on decaying organic matter. In our living soils, rich in humus and plant debris thanks to our organic farming practices, it finds fertile ground to thrive. Its presence perfectly illustrates the complexity and interdependence of the different forms of life that coexist in our vineyards, from the smallest micro-organism to the most visible plants.

This strange fungus first manifests itself in the form of a white "egg", partially buried. Then, red, tentacle-like arms emerge, unfurling into a star-shaped structure. This spectacular metamorphosis is accompanied by a strong smell of carrion, intended to attract flies, which play a crucial role in the dispersal of its spores. Far from being a pest, L'Anthurus d'Archer contributes to the cycle of matter and the decomposition of plant elements, thus participating in the enrichment of our terroirs. As Jean-Baptiste Duquesne points out in "Bordeaux, une histoire de cépages", the richness of the soils is not limited to their mineral composition, but encompasses all the macro and microscopic life they harbour.

Observing L'Anthurus d'Archer is a constant reminder of our duty to preserve this precious biodiversity. Every element of this ecosystem, even the most singular, participates in the overall balance and the unique expression of our terroir. We are thus able to replant ancestral grape varieties in Bordeaux that had disappeared, a work made possible thanks to the support of the many wine lovers who have adopted our wines and share our vision of a respectful and authentic viticulture. Discover the fascinating world of fungi in the vines, beyond L'Anthurus d'Archer.
