I want itOmega Grafting
Grafting is an ancestral technique in viticulture, essential for combining the qualities of a rootstock resistant to soil-borne diseases with a scion producing the desired grape variety. The objective is to ensure the survival and productivity of the vine in the face of threats like phylloxera. Among grafting methods, the Omega graft has become popular for its suitability for mechanisation and its cost-effectiveness.
The Omega graft is a grafting technique particularly valued for its speed and precision, which can be automated. It consists of making two complementary cuts in the shape of a lowercase omega on the rootstock and the scion, allowing for a perfect interlocking fit and an optimal contact surface between the cambiums of the two elements. This method promotes good healing and the fusion of vascular tissues, thus ensuring the circulation of sap.
The main objective of vine grafting is to circumvent the problems posed by phylloxera, a devastating aphid that attacks vine roots. By using an American rootstock resistant to this insect and a Vitis vinifera scion, the production of quality grapes is guaranteed. However, the Omega graft is not without its critics. Recent studies have highlighted necrosis at the graft union, weakening the plant and potentially altering sap circulation in the long term. This fragility is suspected of contributing to the premature decline of certain vines, making the vine more vulnerable to diseases and water stress.
The success of the Omega graft relies on the precision of the cut. It is generally carried out using a specific grafting machine that ensures a perfect match of the shapes. The equipment therefore includes rootstocks, scions, and the grafting machine. Once grafted, the plants are usually dipped in wax to limit dehydration and facilitate the success of the graft. They are then placed in controlled heat and humidity conditions to promote healing before being planted in the nursery.
At Château Cazebonne, we are aware of the issues linked to different viticultural practices. While the Omega graft has revolutionised plant production, we remain attentive to the health of the vines and the search for solutions promoting their longevity and resilience. This commitment is part of our overall approach to sustainable viticulture, mindful of the vineyard's biodiversity. For example, we are interested in massal selection or the use of resistant grape varieties in Bordeaux to guarantee the future of our plantings. We are also committed to vine co-planting to strengthen varietal diversity and thus the resilience of our vineyard, which notably includes techniques like vine top-grafting, and forgotten Bordeaux grape varieties. At the same time, we pay particular attention to cultivation techniques such as tying the vine to ensure optimal growth and good ventilation of the canopy.
Château Cazebonne is committed to the preservation and revival of historical Bordeaux grape varieties. We are carrying out meticulous work to reintroduce heritage varieties that had disappeared from our terroir. This ambitious project is made possible thanks to the unwavering support of a community of enlightened enthusiasts who share our passion and adopt our wines. To deepen your knowledge of the fascinating history of Bordeaux grape varieties and understand the stakes of our viticultural heritage, we invite you to download the digital version of the book "Bordeaux, a history of grape varieties" by clicking here, to test your knowledge with our oenological quizzes, and of course, to discover all of our cuvées available for sale by visiting our online shop.
