Silica

Silica, pillar of the vine's strength and vitality

A fundamental element in the plant kingdom

Silica is a ubiquitous component in nature, constituting a significant part of the Earth's crust and found abundantly in many plants. For the vine, and more specifically within the framework of biodynamics at Château Cazebonne, silica plays a crucial role. It is essential for strengthening cellular structures, offering the plant better resistance against external threats, whether climatic or parasitic. It is recognised for its ability to stimulate photosynthesis, which is at the heart of the vine's vitality by converting solar energy into sugars.

Biodynamic preparation 501 and its action

At Château Cazebonne, silica is not applied as it is. It is meticulously transformed into a specific biodynamic preparation: preparation 501, also known as horn silica preparation. This preparation is made from finely crushed quartz, dynamised according to precise processes to enhance its virtues. Applied as a foliar spray at key moments in the vine's vegetative cycle, its role is manifold:

  • Stimulation of photosynthesis: It improves the capture and use of sunlight by the leaves, promoting a harmonious development of the leaf canopy.
  • Structural strengthening: It contributes to thickening and strengthening grape skins, which is decisive for the aromatic quality and ageing potential of the wines. More robust skins are also an asset against diseases such as powdery and downy mildew, as well as climatic stress. In this regard, the role of horsetail, a plant also rich in silica, should be highlighted for its natural fungicidal properties.
  • Energetic balance: In biodynamics, silica is perceived as a vector of cosmic energies, encouraging the plant to open up to the influences of light and heat, creating a balance between earthly grounding and celestial aspiration.

These combined actions allow the vine to achieve optimal berry ripening, translating into the complexity and authenticity found in our wines.

The link between silica and terroirs of excellence

It is not uncommon to observe that terroirs renowned for the finesse and minerality of their wines have a strong presence of silica. This mineral element actively participates in the expression of the terroir, giving the wines a distinctive typicity and a remarkable ability to age. Silica contributes to soil complexity and the microbial life essential to a living soil, which is crucial for the health and resilience of the vine in the face of growing environmental challenges.

At Château Cazebonne, our commitment to biodynamics and respect for nature is manifested in the care we take at every stage of the vine's vegetative cycle. This meticulous work is the driving force behind our approach, allowing us to replant forgotten grape varieties in Bordeaux that have shaped the region's winemaking history. It is thanks to the support of many enthusiasts who share our vision and adopt our wines that this work of preserving our ampelographic heritage, which is essential for the diversity and resilience of our vineyard, is made possible.
