Forgotten white grape varieties

Once-essential white grapes

In short. Bordeaux white wines are not only about sauvignon and sémillon: many historic white grape varieties, now rare, nearly disappeared. At Château Cazebonne, we are replanting several of them to bring back the diversity of the past.

Before phylloxera, the white vineyards of Bordeaux counted far more varieties than today. Sauvignonasse, long mistaken for sauvignon, merlot blanc, a white mutation of merlot, as well as ugni blanc and colombard were all part of the Gironde wine landscape.

A family of grapes to rediscover

Mauzac, baroque, ondenc, clairette, crouchen, montils, prueras and sauternes — a grape variety, not only an appellation — complete this family of forgotten white grapes that we study and grow again in the Graves.

Echoing Bordeaux's forgotten white grape varieties, Comme en 1900 is a blend of forgotten red grape varieties, such as Mancin and Castets .
